Tiburon Tessellation

Set in the hills along the Tiburon Peninsula, this project transforms a challenging site into an expansive outdoor living space that seamlessly connects the home to its dramatic surroundings. With panoramic views of Tiburon, the Richmond Bay Bridge, and Mount Tamalpais, the new landscape is designed for both relaxation and entertaining.

Working in collaboration with Surface Design, Oxbow executed a series of precision-built improvements that extend the home’s footprint into the hillside. The new basalt patios establish a strong architectural geometry, their angular forms contrasting with the home’s lines and the sweeping landscape beyond. Alternating bands of honed and polished basalt create a subtle play of light and texture across the surface.

To maintain ventilation beneath the residence, Oxbow engineered and installed a custom concrete bracket system attached to a pony wall, supporting the basalt pavers without compromising the crawl space. Additional site features include two fire tables, Ipe wood decking, a natural turf lawn, and low-profile tempered glass railings that preserve uninterrupted bay views.

The site’s steep topography and limited access demanded creative construction solutions. A 9-foot retaining wall with concrete piers extending 20 feet into the slope stabilizes the hillside and supports the new outdoor spaces. Specimen trees were carefully installed along steep slopes, held by custom rock retaining walls. Given the restricted access, materials—including a sculptural basalt column centerpiece—were carefully lifted by crane into the backyard.

Through thoughtful engineering and detailed craftsmanship, Oxbow transformed a difficult hillside into an elegant and enduring outdoor living environment that celebrates both structure and setting.
